2006 - A successful year for the youth squad
Our youth team had another successful year with third place in
the Goodwood Gallops (Joseph Marchant) and overall Surrey League
competitions (Jeremy Costello).
Review of 2004
Our top rider of 2004, without doubt was Toby Neave who finished
third overall in the Goodwood Gallops series of 2004. An excellent
set of results for the young rider who also this year became a 1st
category rider, was crowned team champion, the team's most improved
rider as well as winning the local inter-club hill climb.
Toby finished in third place in the Goodwood Gallops series behind
Ed Perry and Anders Christensen, with Southdown Velo's Tim Costello
taking fifth place. Liam Terry placed 28th overall after an excellent
second in one of the earlier races.
Jacqui Neave, Eugene Bardwell, Shaun Smart, Phil Phillips and Paul
Jeffery also rode at Goodwood in the senior races.
Toby, Liam and Tim also scored top ten places in races and time
trials including the National Circuit Time Trial Championships.
Our youth squad this year swelled to four with Joshua, Jeremy,
Jonathon and Joseph-Pierre all riding. Joshua was crowned youth
champion after scoring most points throughout the year, with Jeremy
the highest placed in the Gallops finishing 9th overall.
We promoted four races this year: the International Havant Grand
Prix, JP's Sussex Border Race and two of the Goodwood Gallop races.

Toby 4th at Thruxton
Toby Neave rode won of his most impressive races at Thruxton. He
initiated the winning break early on and was the last rider left
with Greg Sandy, Neil Coleman and Rob Hurd. Dropped with five laps
to go Toby buried himself to hold off the chasing group. An impressive
ride in such windy conditions. Well done Toby!

Liam goes even closer!
After having been caught on the line a few weeks before to finish
5th, Liam Terry finished a superb 2nd at Goodwood after escaping

Liam nearly takes his first win of the year!
Liam Terry was narrowly pipped on the line at Goodwood. Following
a failed move by a team mate, he counter attacked with a third of
a lap to go at Goodwood motor circuit. Liam was caught almost on
the line to finish an excellent 5th. Toby Neave was 6th and Tim
Costello 8th to complete a fine night out for the Velo.

Sean Hodges wins stage two of the WIGHTlink stage race
Another fantastic weekend for the Southdown Velo with Sean Hodges
winning stage two of the WIGHTlink sponsored two-day stage race
and his team-mate Mark Staden finishing fourth on the first stage.
Overall Mark was placed fifth and Sean seventh.
Sean's win was a supreme effort on a very windy day. Breaking away
from the start, he opened up a clear lead. Rider after rider tried
to close the gap, but none was successful. Sean's reward was to
win not only the 66 mile stage but also the King of the Mountains
competition. Team mates Shaun Smart and Toby Neave finished 26th
and 36th overall respectively.
